High-performance digital interface

first_imgHARTING: Data communications and connector specialist Harting has launched its first modular connector designed for the Category 7A transmission standard, adopted as the future standard for rail vehicle applications.Wi-fi and smarter passenger information systems, video surveillance and monitoring sensors are driving a rapid increase in the amount of data that must be handled onboard, requiring powerful communications networks and faster transmission speeds. According to Levon Altunyan, Industrial Segment Manager, Transportation, at Harting Electric, Cat 7A permits transmission in a higher frequency range than its predecessor.Designed for inter-vehicle jumper connections, the Han Gigabit Cat 7A module provides a parallel 10 Gb Ethernet bandwidth with an operating frequency of up to 1 000 MHz. It is based on the Cat 6A standard interface, but with enhanced shielding which provides significantly improved signal integrity.Cat 7A cables consist of four individually-shielded pairs of wires, which are in turn surrounded by another shielding braid, improving protection against electromagnetic interference. The new interface is shock and vibration resistant, meeting DIN EN 61373 category II, and making it suitable for use under the often-extreme conditions found in railway environments.Another key factor driving digital transmission technology in the rail sector is space, and Harting has been working on the challenge of miniaturisation in terms of EMC, robustness, and ease of handling. Its connectors use labyrinth structures with special enclosures and inserts to support shielded transmission. EMC protection is achieved primarily by homogeneous screening, which depends on good transition between individual components. Overlapping contact zones in the connectors are as large as possible to provide a good contact and low impedance. A combination of the Han HPR (High Pressure Railway) connector hoods and housings with Han Megabit or Gigabit modules has been verified through both laboratory testing and practical trials. The smallest variant to handle a 10 Gigabit transmission is the Han 6 HPR housing, which occupies a base area of 132 mm x 58 mm for the bulkhead-mounted housing, with an overall height of 130 mm. This provides space for two Cat 7A Gigabit modules (male and female). A popular option for jumper cables is the Han 24 HPR housing fitted with up to eight Han Gigabit modules. As well as providing sufficient bandwidth to future-proof the Ethernet transmission for the next generation of trains, this configuration allows the provision of three separate networks in line with UK recommendations.Han Gigabit modules can also be used for retrofitting existing vehicles to meet future digitisation requirements. A recent example saw refurbished vehicles fitted with jumper and patch cables using the 10 Gb interface. Suitable x-coded M12 circular connectors are used to connect the wireless local area network to the main cable assembly.last_img read more

Days of the Bagnold Summer VOD review

first_imgSue (Monica Dolan) is preparing to wave goodbye to her son Daniel (Earl Cave) as he jets off to America to spend the summer with his father. A last-minute phone call from Daniel’s dad cancels those plans, leaving the sulky teenager with his mother for the duration of the summer. The uneasy relationship between the two is put to the test as they try to battle through the unexpected time together and navigate their own pent up issues.Days of the Bagnold Summer is based on the graphic novel by Joff Winterhart and it’s the directorial debut of The Inbetweeners star Simon Bird. Due to Bird’s involvement, it’s likely that people will come to this film expecting an Inbetweeners type film but that’s most certainly not what they’ll get. Instead Days of the Bagnold Summer is a sensitive and pensive look at the troubled relationship between a mother and the son she can’t seem to understand or relate to.Credit: Altitude FilmOn the plus side the relationship is captured realistically. Any single parent that has found themselves spending an interrupted summer with a moody teenager will be able to relate and that relationship is what the entire film hangs on. Sue is trying to step out of her comfort zone, flirting (literally) with the idea of dating one of Daniel’s teachers while Daniel channels his anger into falling out with his best friend, becoming the lead singer of a rock band and putting his mum down at every opportunity. On the down side, that’s pretty much all that there is to this film. The laugh-out-loud moments you expect never area and there’s not a single moment of real drama across the 86 minutes. It feels more like we’re getting a glimpse into the dynamic between Sue and Daniel than watching a compelling story unravel. The lack of laughs and dramatic tension left me wondering exactly what point Bird was trying to get across. The film adds nothing to the oft-explored family relationship dynamic that is at the heart of many a film.Credit: Altitude FilmMonica Dolan is practically unrecognisable as Sue and her performance here is very good. She plays Sue sympathetically as a mother who is trying to make her son happy but never seems to manage to get it right. Earl Cave on the other hand is a little too one note. There’s no depth or layers to Daniel past the grimacing and sulking so he doesn’t really give Dolan much to work with. The rest features familiar faces such as Tamsin Greig and Rob Brydon, who are no doubt doing Bird a favour by appearing.Days of the Bagnold Summer doesn’t really have very much to say and that’s my overall issue with it. The performances, for the most part, are fine but the story doesn’t really go anywhere. It’s light on laughs, devoid of drama and offers nothing new as it explores a mother-son dynamic. With Bird behind the camera I’d had high hopes and while this is a well-made film, it’s not one I’m going to remember as the weeks pass by.Cast: Monica Dolan, Earl Cave, Tamsin Greig, Rob Brydon, Alice Lowe Director: Simon Bird Writer: Lisa Owens (screenplay), Joff Winterhart (graphic novel) Certificate: 15 Duration: 86 mins Released by: Altitude Film Release date: 8th June 2020last_img read more

Outrage as Somali parliament drafts law permitting child, forced marriages

first_imgSomali Parliament endorses Presidential pick for Prime Minister Somali President calls for “better way” than forced repatriation of refugees in Kenya Big explosion, gunfire near parliament in Somali capitalcenter_img Internally displaced girls in Somalia queue before at a school beside an IDP camp in Dollow, Somalia April 4, 2017. REUTERS/Zohra Bensemra Internally displaced girls in Somalia queue before at a school beside an IDP camp in Dollow, Somalia April 4, 2017. REUTERS/Zohra BensemraSomalia’s parliament has sparked outrage by replacing long-awaited legislation to protect women and girls from violence with a new bill permitting child and forced marriage. The east African nation has high rates of child marriage and violence against women, including rape and female genital mutilation (FGM). The United Nations says 45% of women are married before 18, while 98% have undergone FGM.In 2018, Somalia’s cabinet approved the landmark Sexual Offences bill aimed at criminalising a wide range of forms of gender-based violence including rape, child marriage and sex trafficking. The bill sets out clear duties for police, investigators and prosecutors and provides specific protections for vulnerable groups such as children, people with disabilities and internally displaced people. It had been pending before the lower house of parliament for over two years until Saturday, when a new bill, the Sexual Intercourse bill, which allows for girls who reach puberty to be married, was introduced before legislators.“This bill is about discussion. Every MP has his/her own saying on it. We want it passed after discussion,” Abdiwali Sheikh Ibrahim, deputy speaker of the lower house of parliament, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.Ibrahim did not comment on why the new bill was drafted, but said it was a move taken by the ministries of justice, women and human development in consultation with Islamic scholars.Ari Gaitanis, spokesman for the U.N. mission in Somalia (UNSOM), said it would be a “step backwards” for the rights of women and girls in Somalia. UNSOM has expressed its concern to the parliament speaker, he said.“This proposed new bill, the Law on Sexual Intercourse Related Crimes, is deeply flawed and in serious breach of international standards,” Gaitanis said in a statement emailed to the Thomson Reuters Foundation.“The original Sexual Offences bill, which the U.N. and so many others are calling for to be reintroduced, is a comprehensive bill which is more in conformity with internationally accepted standards.”International donors to Somalia also expressed concerns. Ben Fender, Britain’s ambassador to Somalia, tweeted this was “a big moment for MPs to decide Somalia’s future values.”“Govt submitted a modern Sexual Offences bill after consulting imams, scholars. Never debated. New draft allows marriage at puberty + says forced marriage is one where the family (not individual) doesn’t consent.”More than 16,000 people have signed an online petition calling on the Somali parliament to throw out the Sexual Intercourse bill and pass the Sexual Offences bill.“We are deeply concerned with the amended Sexual Offences Bill as it sets a dangerous precedent in a country already marred by gender-based sexual violence,” said petitioner Jabril Mohamed.“This amended bill is harmful in nature to all Somalis but especially to women, girls and children as it does not protect from child marriage, forced marriage, rape and other forms of sexual abuse.”Relatedlast_img read more

Expansion Helps Quarriers Family Support Service Go From Strength to Strength

first_imgJan Hiddleston and Kay McCutcheon AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to FacebookFacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitterTwitterShare to LinkedInLinkedInLinkedInThe service provides support for children, young people and families affected by disability throughout Dumfries & Galloway – Quarriers, one of Scotland’s leading social care charities, is celebrating the success of its Family Support Service in Dumfries a year on from its move to bigger premises. The service has had a brilliant year, receiving a glowing report from the Care Inspectorate, the body that regulates and inspects care services in Scotland. In addition to this, the service was shortlisted for the National Learning Disabilities Awards 2017 in the Sporting Chance category.Quarriers Family Support Service provides help to children, young people and families affected by disability throughout Dumfries & Galloway. With offices in Dumfries and Stranraer, Quarriers provides family-based short breaks for children with disabilities, and support for families affected by disability by providing help to parents, children and young people at home or in their local communities.Short breaks are offered to children with complex needs and disabilities, and there are currently 13 foster carers providing short breaks to 17 children. The Care Inspectorate report published in June 2017 rated the quality of care and support provided as ‘excellent’, the highest rating available; whilst the quality of staffing was said to be ‘very good’.Anita and EvieAnita Stott, 60 from Dumfries, was a nurse for 32 years and in her retirement she decided to take on a new role as a foster carer with Quarriers. She has fostered three children with complex needs on a short-break basis in the last eight years.Anita currently fosters Evie, a nine-year-old girl with autism, who struggles with some everyday activities. Speaking about how rewarding the role is Anita said: “I love what I do. I didn’t know much about autism before looking after her – but I do now, and I’m so glad I can support and help her mum who is working and copes with a lot. My care allows her a break and a chance to be supported. “She likes being outside so we go on nature rambles searching for red squirrels or going to the park or the beach. Much of her world is so confusing and I like to see her relax and enjoy her surroundings.”Most short-break foster carers support a child for 29 overnights per year; Anita provides up to 52, which reflects the additional help that the young girl’s mother needs.Anita added, “The training is very comprehensive and doesn’t pull any punches. You need to know and understand everything about a child or young person’s life to then be a meaningful part of it.”The service is looking to expand its social support into adulthood, with a new project called ‘The Next Step’. This will support young people and adults up to the age of 30 and will provide a range of interventions and support to increase their skills, self-esteem and confidence.Jan Hiddleston, Service Coordinator at Quarriers Family Support Service, Dumfries & Galloway said: “We are so pleased with the success of the service over the course of the last 12 months. Our glowing report from the Care Inspectorate reinforces our commitment to providing the highest quality care. Our principle aim at the service is to improve the lives of children and young people with complex needs and disabilities through the provision of short breaks and permanent placements. To be given such high ratings is a real testament to the level of care and skill provided by all our support workers and foster carers.“It’s been a great year for the service and to be in a position to be launching a new social support service for young adults up to the age of 30 is really encouraging.“We want to keep spreading the word of what we’re doing and ask anyone interested in becoming a short break foster carer or family support worker to get in touch. If you are looking for support from Quarriers, please do get in touch with us so we can start the conversation and see how we can help to make your, and your family’s, lives better.”Quarriers encourages those keen to make a difference to the lives of children with disabilities and their families, or those looking for support, to contact the service on:Quarriers Family Support Service161 Brooms Road,DumfriesDG1 2SHTel: 01387 249888Email: jan.hiddleston@quarriers.org.uklast_img read more
